Laser manufacturing is a promising method for the design and preparation of high value-added materials. When it comes to laser and polymer resin precursors, there are always some wonderful things happen and accompanied by the creation of new substance. Herein, we reported a top-down approach to direct preparation of orange-yellow dye similar to psittacofulvins from commercial polymer resins by laser writing. The conjugated double bonds and micro-rough structure are formed simultaneously on the laser-irradiated polymer substrate surface. The typical polyconjugated structure of psittacofulvins dye were confirmed by Micro-Raman and Raman imaging results. Temperature-dependent FTIR and XPS analysis further demonstrate the formation mechanism of laser-induced psittacofulvins dye from the chemical composition. Moreover, the optical microscope, laser confocal microscope, and scanning electron microscope were carried out to characterize the physical morphology of laser-irradiated polymer substrate. The unique advantage of laser-induced psittacofulvins dye is step simple, and the dye can be converted directly from the appropriate precursor substrate. Interestingly, the laser-irradiated polymer substrate surface area undergoes color change. This laser-induced color patterning is attractive due to the characteristics of high precision, flexibility, and maskless; any patterns can be easily designed and fabricated on the polymer at desired positions.
