Unsupervisedpatternrecognition(UPR)techniquewasusedtoclassifytheAEsignalscollectedfromthedamageprocessofdifferentlay-upofself-reinforcedpolyethylene(PE/PE)composites,inordertoobtaintypicalwaveformsofdiversedamagemodesreliably.Pureresinandfiberbundleswerealsotestedforthistask.Typicalwaveformsofmatrixcracking,fiber-matrixdebonding,fiberfractureandfiberpulloutwerepresentedandcharacterizedrespectively.FastFourierTransformanalysiswasalsousedforthecharacterization.ThischaracteristicinformationcanbeusedfortheidentificationofdamagemechanismsinthePE/PEcomposites.Andtheanalyticalprocedurecanbeexploitedtoinvestigateotherfailuremodesincompositematerials.
