Ring-openingmetathesispolymerization(ROMP),awidespreadtooltosynthesizewell-definedandhighlyfunctionalizedpolymers,hasexpandedtherealmofpolymersynthesis.TheGrubbscatalystsoftenusedinROMPwhicharewell-defined,stableandhigh-efficiencymakethereactionbeabletotakeplaceundermildconditions.Inparticular,theGrubbs’ssecondgenerationcatalyst(G2)containingN-heterocycliccarbeneligand(NHC)exhibitshigheractivityandfunctionalgrouptolerancethanthefirstgeneration.However,uptonow,theolefinmetathesisreactionsofmonomerscontainingnitrilegroupsarestillchallenging.Inthisstudy,thelivingROMPof2,3-dicyanonorborn-5-enewasinvestigatedundertheactionoftheGrubbs’ssecondgenerationcatalystinthepresenceofLewisacid.Herein,Fe2+andFe3+wereusedasLewisacidstoassistthepolymerization,respectively.ThepolymersobtainedwerecharacterizedbyGPCand1HNMR.TheresultsshowthatROMPof2,3-dicyanonorborn-5-enecanbeaccomplishedinarelativelyshortperiodwithalowerPDI(wasadded.Moreover,Fe3+ispreferablethanFe2+toincreasethemonomerconversioninROMPof2,3dicyanonorborn-5-ene.
