Inthisstudy,weusedacombinationofatomtransferradicalpolymerization,ringopeningpolymerization,andclickchemistrytosynthesizeneworganic/inorganicmacromolecularself-assemblingbuildingblocksofpolystyrene-trpoly(y-propargyl-l-glutamate-g-polyhedraloligomericsilsesquioxane)[PS-/r(PPLG-g-POSS)].TheincorporationofthePSandPOSSunitsenhancedthea-helicalconformationinthesolidstate,asdeterminedusingFouriertransforminfrared(FTIR)spectroscopyandwide-angleX-raydiffraction(WAXD).Hierarchicalself-assemblyofthePS-/r(PPLG-g-POSS)diblockcopolymers,whichwecharacterizedusingWAXD,small-angleX-rayscattering,andtransmissionelectronmicroscopy,ledtotheformationofcylindricalstructuresasaresultofmicrophaseseparationofthediblockcopolymer;thehexagonalcylinderpackingnanostructurefeatureda-helicalconformationsofpolypeptidesegments,whichwereorientedperpendiculartothedirectionofthecylindercolumnfromdiblockcopolymers;aggregationofthePOSSmoietiesinducedthepackingintohexagonallatticestructures.TheattachmentofPOSSunitsontothesidechainsofPPLGstabilizedthea-helicalsecondarystructuresatelevatedtemperature,relativetothoseofpurePPLGandPS-trPPLG,asdeterminedthroughtemperature-dependentFTIRspectroscopicanalyses.
