Polymerizedhighinternalphaseemulsions(polyHIPEs),withahighlyporousandinterconnectedmorphology,arematerialspreparedbypolymerizingthecontinuousphaseofanHIPE.AndthecavitysizeofpolyHIPEsiseasilytunablebyvariousmeans[l].Unfortunately,alargeamountoforganicsolventsareusedinthetraditionalHIPE.TheseproblemscanbeovercamebytemplatingsupercriticalC02-in-water(C/W)emulsions.However,C02isfeeblesolventandmostofpolymersandpolarmassesaredifficulttodissolve;effectivesurfactantsplayanimportantroleintheformationofC/Wemulsions.Thesurfactantsareusuallynon-degradableanddifficulttoberemovedfromthemonolithsc2].WefoundthatpartiallyhydrolyzedPVAsolutionscanformemulsionswithdenseC02atlowertemperature.ThereasonisthatthepartiallyhydrolyzedPVAisacopolymerofpoly(vinylacetate)andpoly(vinylalcohol),whichissimilartoblockcopolymercharacteristics,andPVAsolutionhashigherviscosity,whichincreasesthestabilityofemulsion.Inthisstudy,highlyporouscross-linkedpoly(vinylalcohol)hydrogelmaterialswerepreparedbysurfactantfreetemplatingconcentratedC/Wemulsionsatcoolingtemperature.PVAmonolithsmaterials,whichconformcloselytotheinteriorofthereactionvessel,wereobtained.Theaverageporesize(10一20ym)ofthemonolithsmaterialswasdeterminedbyscanningelectronmicroscope(SEM).AndthePVAhydrogelswereusedastissueengineeringscaffolds,onwhichhumanfibroblastcellscangrowwell.
