PAAmicrocapsuleswereobtainedthroughdistillationprecipitationpolymerizationandselectiveremovalofsilicatemplatesbyhydrofluoricacid(HF)etching.Theuniform,robust,monodispersemicrocapsules,confirmedbyTransmissionElectronMicroscopy(TEM)andScanningElectronMicroscope(SEM)investigation,hadreversiblephotoisomerizationwithtransformationbetweentransandcisisomersunderultraviolet(UV)andvisiblelights.UnderUVirradiation,azobenzenecrosslinkingsitestransformedfromtrans-tocis-isomer,whichwouldinducetheshrinkageofmicrocapsuleswithdensershellandinfluencetheirencapsulationandreleasebehaviors.AfterloadingwithRhodamineB,thereleasebehaviorswerecompletelydistinct.UndersingleUVirradiation,theshrinkageadjustedcapsulepermeability,providinganovelwaytoencapsulateRhBmolecules.Underalternatelightirradiation,maximalreleaseamountreachedduetocontinualmovementsofshellnetworksbycycle‘stransformationbetweentransandcisisomers.Also,microcapsuleshadabsolutepHresponsiveness.WithpHvalueincreasing,enhancedswellingeffectscausedbetterosmoticandafewmoreRhBmoleculesdiffusedoffmicrocapsules.Importantimplicationsofthisapproachareexpectedindevelopmentofphoto-controlledencapsulationandreleasesystemsaswellasinpH-sensitivematerialsandmembranes.
