Polymericnanocomposites(PNCs)haveattractedalotofattentionduetoitspotentialsinsuperiormechanicalproperties,conductivity,gaspermeability,tonameafew,thatverymuchsurpasswhatconventionalpolymercompositescanprovide.ThesuccessofPNCsrequiresagooddispersionofthereinforcementphaseinthepolymermatrix.Inthesewell-dispersedPNCs,sub-micron,orevennanometersthickpolymerisconfinedbetweenreinforcementphases.UnderstandingthedynamicsofsuchthinpolymermeltsconfinedbetweentworubbingsurfacescanhenceprovideimportantinsightonboththedispersionmechanismsandprocessingofPNCs.Yetlittleworkonthedirectmeasurementofthetheologyofthinpolymermeltshasbeenperformedasthenanoscopicfilmthicknessbarstheuseofconventionaltechniques.Recentlytheauthorshavesuccessfullyappliedphotobleached-fluorescenceimagingtoobtainthefirstexperimentthroughthicknessflowprofileofa100nmpolymerfilmconfinedbetweentworubbingsurfacescl].Basedonthetechniquedeveloped,theobjectiveofthispresentationistodiscusstheeffectofshearrateonthetheologyofthinpolymerfilm.Polybutene(PB)wasusedasthemodelpolymer.PBshowsmultipleflowphenomena.ItdoesnotfollowthepredictedCouetteflowandoftenassumedforNewtonianliquid.Twodistinctflowconditionswereobserved:transitionfromCouetteflowtoanon-linearvelocityprofile;andshearbanding.Interfacialslipswerealsoquantified.Causesofnon-linearprofilesarefurtherinvestigatedwithcomputationalsimulations.Preliminaryresultsshowthatalinearprofileistheonlypossiblesolutionforaconstantstresslayereveninpresenceofapowerlaw.Afunctionaldependenceofthefluidviscosityonthedistancefromthewall,inparticular,theviscosityofthefluidtoincreaseatleastlinearlyawayfromthewallwasnecessaryfortheobservedphenomena.Thisbehaviorisexplainedatamicroscopiclevelbyconsiderationsonthemobilityoflongmoleculesnearawall.
