Thepoly(lacticacid)(PLA)/ramiefiberbiocompositeswerefabricatedbyextrusioncompoundingfollowedbyinjectionmolding,andfurtherattemptsweremadetounderstandtheflow-inducedmorphologyoframiefibersandPLAcrystalsintheinjection-moldedPLA/ramiefiberbiocomposites,thusrevealingitsrelationshipwithbiocompositemechanicalproperties.Thepolarizedopticalmicroscopy(POM)andtwo-dimensionalwide-angleX-raydiffraction(2D-WAXD)wereforthefirsttimeusedtodeterminethedistributionofnaturefibers,whichinterestinglyshowedtheramiefibersalignedwellalongtheflowdirectionoverthewholethicknessofinjection-moldedparts,insteadofskin-corestructure.ThiseasyalignmentoframiefibersduringthecommonprocessingwasascribedtotheintrinsicallyhighflexibilityoframiefibersandstronginterfacialinteractionbetweenPLAchainsandcellulosemoleculesoframiefibers.Both2D-WAXDanddifferentialscanningcalorimeter(DSC)measurementssuggestedthatthePLAmatrixinitsramiebiocompositespresentedhigherorientationdegreeandcrystallinity,whichwasattributedtoeffectiveheterogeneousnucleationinducedbyramiefibersandlocalshearingfieldinthevicinityoffibersurface.Remarkableimprovementofmechanicalandthermo-mechanicalpropertieswasachievedforPLA/ramiefiberbiocomposites,withoutsacrificeoftoughnessandductility.Additionof30wt%ramiefibersincreasedthetensilestrengthandmodulusofPLA/ramiefiberbiocompositesfrom65.6and1468MPaforpurePLAt091.3and2977MPa,respectively.Thesesuperiormechanicalpropertieswereprimarilyattributedtoeasyalignmentoframiefibers,highcrystallinityofPLA,andfavorableinterfacialadhesionasrevealedbyscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)observationandtheoreticalanalysisbasedondynamicmechanicalanalysis(DMA)data.
