Recently,utilizingnanoscaledfibersasafillertoreinforcetransparentpolymershasdrawnwidespreadattentionintheresearchanddevelopmentofopticallytransparentcomposites.[1-2]Thepurposeofthisstudywastodeterminetheeffectsofelectrospunalignednylon-6(PA-6)nanofibersasreinforcementonmechanicalperformanceandlighttransmittanceofthepoly(methylmethacrylate)(PMMA)basedcomposite.SimultaneouselectrospinningofPA-6andPMMAontoahighspeedrotatingdrumcollectorenabledustogenerateindividualfilamentswell-mingledfibrousmats,consistedoftheelectrospunalignedPA-6nanofibersandPMMAfibers.Thesematsweresubsequentlystackedlayer-by-layertofabricatetransparentcompositepanelsofPA-6/PMMAbyahotcompressionmoldingmethod.ItwasfoundthatPMMAcompositesreinforcedwiththeunidirectionallyorientedPA-6nanofibersofferedthemaximumimprovementinmechanicalpropertiesalongthefiberdirection,whileitstransparencydecreasedslightlyifincreasingthePA-6contentmorethan3wt%.Specifically,withasacrificeofmerely9%intransparencywhenthePA-6nanofiberloadingsarelessthan3wt%,anincrementofmorethan80%inthetensilepropertiesofthecompositeswasachievable.Ourworkthereforehasdemonstratedthestructuraldesignabilityofopticallytransparentcompositewithoutsignificantlycompromisingopticalperformance.
