Thisworkfocusedonthepreparationofpolyhedraloligomericsilsesquioxane(POSS)/polysiloxanebyin-situreactionandaimedtoimprovethedispersionofPOSSandthethermalstabilityofpolysiloxanethroughtheformationofchemicallinksbetweenPOSSandpolysiloxane.TwodifferentPOSS,octaisobutyl-POSS(OIBS)andallylisobutyl-POSS(AIBS),wereincorporatedintopoly(methylvinylsiloxane)(VMQ)bymeltmixingandthereactionofPOSSduringtheperoxidecuringwasstudied.NMRanalysisrevealedthatAIBSmoleculescontainingdoublebondsweresuccessfullygraftedontoVMQmacromolecularchainsduringthecrosslinkingofVMQ.MoleculardynamicssimulationandthermogravimetricanalysisshowedthatOIBSandAIBShadsimilarparametersandthermalstability.However,morphologyandthermalstabilitystudiesbymeansofopticalmicroscopy,X-raydiffraction,scanningelectronmicroscopyandthermogravimetricanalysisdiscoveredthatAIBSexhibitednano-dispersioninVMQmatrixandimprovedthethermalstabilityofVMQ,butinertOIBSmoleculesaggregatedextensivelytoformcrystalsandadverselyaffectedthethermalstability.FurtherstudiesonthethermalstabilityofVMQwithdifferentcontentsofAIBSshowedthatthethermalstabilityfirstincreasedwithincreasingcontentofAIBSbutthenbegantodecreaseasthecontentofAIBSexceeded7.5wt%.ItrevealedthatthegraftedPOSShinderedthethermaldegradationofpolysiloxanebuttheungraftedPOSSfavoredthethermaldegradation.
