Inseveralbranchesofthemedicalfield,fromcardiologyorthopaedicstotissueengineering,therehasbeenanincreasingtrendintheuseofbiodegradablematerialsinplaceoftraditional,biostablematerials,suchasmetals,ceramicsandsyntheticpolymers.Biodegradablepolymersandtheircompositesareprominentintheseareasandareofgreatinterestforresearchbecausethereismuchroomforimprovement.Thispaperwillfocusontheapplicationofpolymerblendsandcompositesinbioabsorbablestentsandtissuescaffolds.PLLAisveryprominentinthefieldofbioabsorbablestentsbutitsuffersfrombrittlenesswhichmustbemitigated.OnemethodofdoingthisistoblendPLLAwithrubberypolymerstocreateductileblendswhichstrikeabalancebetweenductility,strength,modulusanddegradationcharacteristics.Thispaperdiscussesthedevelopmentoftheirmechanicalcharacteristics,fromYoung‘smodulustocreep,whichoccursduringdegradation.PLLAisalsoacommonmaterialunderinvestigationfortissuescaffolds.Alargeproportionofworkinthisareafocusesonelectrospinningtocreatetissuescaffoldsbutthisrequirestheuseoforganicsolvents.AprocessforproducingscaffoldswithouttheuseoforganicsolventshasbeendevelopedattheCentreforAdvancedCompositeMaterials,TheUniversityofAuckland.Theprocessinvolvesdrawingofanextrudedpolymercompositefilamenttofibrilisethedispersedphase.Afterproducinganetworkofmicro-/nano-fibrilsthroughacommonmanufacturingtechnique,thematrixisremovedviadissolutioninwater,leavinga3-Dfibrillar,nanoporousnetwork.Thisnetworkcanbeusedasatissuescaffoldwiththeadvantageoverelectrospunnetworksofhavingnoresidualorganicsolventcontent.Thispaperdescribestheprocessofscaffoldmanufacturingwithsomeresultsofin-vitrocellculture.
