Cellulosenanowhiskers(CNWs)withanaspectratioofover10werepreparedfromramiebyacidhydrolysis.CNWswereaddedtopoly(vinylalcohol)(PVA),pectinandtheirblendstopreparefilmsthroughcastingmethod,respectively.TheresultingPVA/CNWandPVA/pectin/CNWfilmsshowedtheenhancedmechanicalpropertiessuchastensilestrengthandelongationatbreakcomparedwithneatPVAandPVA/pectinfilms,whichimpliedthatcellulosenanowhiskerswithhighaspectratiohadapositiveeffectonreinforcingPVAandpectin.PVA/CNWfilmswithahighCNWloadofapproximate10%hadhightransparency,whichwasconfirmedbyUV-visspectroscopy.Pectinsolutionhadalightbrowncolor,butPVA/pectin/CNWsfilmsstillhadanexcellenttransparency.ThenanoscaledimensionsofCNWsandtheirgooddispersibility,whichweredeterminedbySEM,contributedwelltothetransparencyofblendedfilms.MoistureabsorptionwasalsoreducedtosomeextentwhenacertainamountofCNWswereaddedtoblendedfilms.AfterCNWswereaddedtoPVAorPVA/pectin,intermolecularinteractionlikehydrogenbondswouldbeformed.Withallthegoodproperties,PVA/CNWsandPVA/pectin/CNWsfilmswillbepromisingmaterialsinfoodpackagingandopticsapplications
