Solventcasting/particulateleaching(SC/PL)ismostcommonlyusedforfabricatingmicro-porousandmacro-porouspolymerscaffolds.Theadvantageofthismethodisthattheprocessiseasytocarryoutandeasytocontroltheporesizeandporositybyselectingsuitableparticlesizeandamountoftheaddedsaltparticles.However,thescaffoldspreparedbythismethodusuallyhaveadensesurfacelayerandpoorinterconnectivitybetweenmacropores.Therefore,mostofthescaffoldspreparedbythismethodareeitherlimitedtotwo-dimensionalfilmsorconstructedbylaminationofseveralfilmsintodesiredshape.Inourpreviousstudy,amodifiedmethod,namelythesolventcasting/vacuumvolatilization/particulateleaching(SC/VV/PL)method,isproposedtofabricatethree-dimensionalpoly(lacticacid)(PLA)scaffoldscl]andgradedmacroporousPLAscaffoldc2]withadesiredrangeofcompressivemodulus,controlledporesizesandporosities.Inthisstudy,thePLAscaffoldswerefabricatedbytheSC/VV/PLmethodandtraditionalSC/PLmethodandwerecomparativelyresearched.Theeffectofthesizedistributionofporogenontheinterconnectivitybetweentheporeswasdiscussed,too.TheresultsshowedthattheSC/VV/PLmethodhassomeadvantageswhichcanovercomesomeshortcomingsofthetraditionalSC/PLmethod,suchasunsatisfactorysurfacestructure,longprocessingtimeandpoorinterconnectivitybetweenmacropores.Moreover,broadsizedistributionoftheporogenisbetterforforminggoodinterconnectivitybetweenmacropores.Whenthesmallsizeporogenwasblendedinthebigsizeporogen,thesmallNaCIparticlescanfilltheinterspaceamongthebigparticles.Thepackingvolumeoftheporogenwithbroadsizedistributionissmallerthanthesamequalityporogenwithnarrowsizedistribution.Thismeanstheporogenwithbroadsizedistributioncanbepackedmorecompactness.Thesmallparticlesbetweenbigparticlescancontributetowell-interconnectedporousstructure.
